Jojoba Oil: The Natural Skin Wonder

We are all looking for the answers to gorgeous skin and most of us will do ’til we take our last breath! However, rather than looking around the counters of Harvey Nicks (although i can’t help it, temptation is everywhere!), the solutions to the most common skin problems can be found in our kitchen cupboards and medicine drawer.

Natural oils are one of the best ways to look after our skin naturally without using expensive, paraban laden creams which claim to turn us into new women. The one I am going to focus on today is Jojoba oil, which for many has proved to be a miracle product.

Jojoba oil is actually a liquid wax which is extracted from the seeds of the Jojoba plant in the US and Mexico. What makes this oil so special is that it is very similar to human sebum – the oil which is produced by sebaceous glands in our skin and is responsible for keeping our skin supple and moist. Sebum can cause a lot of problems however when too much is produced resulting in oily skin and blocked pores, which can lead to dreaded acne.

What Jojoba does when used as a moisturiser is that it mimics sebum and tricks the skin into thinking it has produced enough. This regulates the oil flow and controls shine, sebum production and ultimately spots. And before you faint at the thought of putting oil/wax on your skin, it is non-comedogenic and so won’t block pores. As it is a natural substance with no additives it is also perfect for sensitive skin and allergy sufferers!

Jojoba oil also contains vitamin E, which is great for promoting skin health and is also an antioxidant so helps get rid of those nasty free radicals which are credited with promoting cancers and other not very nice diseases.

The oil is already in skincare everywhere including anti-ageing creams, moisturisers and cleansers but by getting your hands on some pure Jojoba oil will save you a packet and arguably does the job just as well.
