Official Fashion Colour of the Spring: Radiant Orchid

Wednesday, 29 January 2014

Good evening lovelies!

Tonight brings a slightly later post then normal, but it has been a busy few days. I'm officially over January and all the blues it brings. Actually, stuff it, I'm over Winter!

I'm incredibly excited for the Spring/Summer season 2014 and can't wait for an updated wardrobe! It is my favourite time of year with the warmer weather and fun times to be had.

A new season means new 'it' colours, and this year the spring/summer season means that Radiant Orchid is that cool colour that everyone is going to want to be seen in.  This past Winter season it was 'Ox Blood'.

From left to right: READY eye shadow in The Dream Sequence, £29, bareMinerals;  Krista dress, £139, Hobbs London;  Stila lip balm in Gemma, £16, Space NK;  Nails Inc nail polish in Devonshire Row, £11, ASOS;  Aspinal leather iPad case, £125, Selfridges;  Low heels, £35, ASOS

This colour is basically a fuschia purple colour, but hot damn I love it!  It is about time that purple made big a splash on the catwalks and beauty counters!  I'll certainly be getting myself the nail polish and lippy!

I think it is a universally flattering colour on various skin tones, but would look especially amazing against African-American skin tones!  It is like a deeply coloured gem almost. Just stunning.

Will you be wearing this colour?

Summer Nail Art

Wednesday, 17 July 2013

Now's the perfect time to break out of your plain nail polish routine and try something bright, bold, and fun

Electric Orange Tips
Give a traditional French manicure a fun and summery twist by using a neon polish for your tips. Simply paint your nails any sheer nude shade, and once that is completely dry paint your tips in a bright orange, like Zoya in Paz, £8. For extra precision while drawing on the tips, use a thin paintbrush (you can buy one at any craft store). Finish with a clear topcoat.

Orange and Mint Triangles Don't have a steady hand but still want a complicated-looking nail art style? Try this scotch tape trick. Cut pieces of scotch tape into triangles and then paint them any bright color of your choice. A bright shade like Essie in Orange It's Obvious, £8, works really well. Let the painted tape pieces dry.

Next, paint your nails in color that contrasts well, like Essie in Mint Candy Apple. Wait five minutes for this to dry, and then carefully apply each triangle tape at the tips of your nails. For extra control, use a pair of tweezers to place
the pieces of tape. Press down on the triangles firmly, and then apply a topcoat.

Neon Stripes Stripes

are one of the easiest, no-brainer nail art designs. The trick is to go for thicker stripes, because they're easier to paint on than delicate thin lines. To get this look, paint your nails in a bright pink shade like Ciate in Cupcake Queen, £12. Let this dry for five minutes, and then using a bright yellow like Ciate in Big Yellow Taxi, draw a slightly off-center vertical line down each nail. Let this dry and finish with a clear topcoat.

Pastel Rainbow

This pastel mixed-color mani requires absolutely zero nail art skills, but it still has a trendy, beachy vibe. You can use any five pastel shades of your choice -- one for each nail. Essie, £8 each, has some gorgeous pastel options like Mint Candy Apple, French Affair, Coat Azure, Tart Deco, and Pop Art Pink.

 Grey Half Moons

The half moon style is essentially an opposite French manicure. Instead of the tips, you are highlighting just above your cuticles, creating a half moon. First paint your nails in a neutral shade. A soft gray like Essie in Chinchilly, £8, works nicely. Let this dry completely.

Next, paint over your nails in a bright shade like Butter LONDON in Primrose Hill Picnic, £12. But do not paint your nails entirely. Instead, leave a gray crescent shape just above your cuticles. For more precision, you can use a thin paintbrush to create the half moon shape. Finish with a clear topcoat.

Enjoy these amazing nail art ideas...

Summer Fitness: Bikini Body 101

Monday, 15 July 2013

Evening girlies ;-)

So the United Kingdom has finally had some great luck with the weather (no rain whatsoever!) and the summer has well and truly arrived!  We've had weather hotter than 31 degrees Celcius and everyone here have got all their cute dresses, shorts and summery clothes out.

With that being said though, there are lots of girls that might not be feeling in tip top physical condition and you might still be feeling a bit self concious over your tummy, legs or arms.  Fret not!  I'm here to go on a fitness journey with you.  Hopefully we can inspire and encourage each other so that we can banish those feelings of self conciousness and finally embrace our bodies.  It doesn't matter if we have boy shapes, curves, the perfect hour glass or anything else...we are here to just LOVE who we are.

So today I'm quickly kicking off my ideas and sharing my favourite exercise guru's of the moment.  I'll be posting a very conservative picture here of my "curves" <~~~ HAHAHA to show the path that I'll be taking.  I've got my holiday in 57 days AND two weddings within the next two months.  I'd like to look and feel my best, as most girls would.

So if you'd like to kick off and join me in my fitness journey, I'd suggest you check back on Friday when I'll be proposing my ideas and the start of my journey.  You can share you're details as well and comment with ideas and tips.  I'm sure everyone would LOVE to read all your comments.

So without further ado, my favourite exercise guru's of the moment is the Tone Up girls called Katrina and Karena.  They look fantastic and really LIVE fitness and healthy clean eating.

You can buy their DVD and Bikini range here and here.  OR check out the Tone It Up principles and tips  here.

I'm absolutely NOT being paid for saying that I love these girls.  I'm genuinely excited about their tips/tricks and exercise vids on YouTube.  It is exciting and from the heart, which I absolutely love.  Just check it out, if you don't like it fair enough!  :-)  I discovered them via Chriselle Lim's Blog, The Chriselle Factor.

Let me know if you would like to see more fitness stuff on here.  I'd love to induldge you!

Flawless Skin by Summer

Friday, 17 May 2013

Hey everyone,

Happy Friday!!

For the most part I consider my self a planner, a list-maker, a generally-organised type of chick. The exception? Whenever the seasons change.

Chalk it up to living the majority of my life in Southern Africa (where we barely even have seasons), but I'm always caught off guard when the weather flips. And now that I live in the United Kingdom I typically don't get around to buying a new coat until February or a new bathing suit until July, and at that point it's a bit of a wash.

Same with my daily skin care routine. I'll find myself using my heavy winter creams in April and wondering why my skin is breaking out. So when the first hints of summer showed its cute little face I knew it was time to start tweaking my skincare routine - a must for spring. I considered it a chance to get myself in gear for the new season too. I looked to some of the experts for both the product swaps we should all be making, as well as the in-office and at-home skin care treatments that help get rid of dry, winter skin in time for shorts weather.

Now I've got a new daily skin care regimen and heck, I may even get a jump-start on buying a new bikini this year, too.

Enroll in body bootcamp

This is not a call to hit the gym (although that certainly doesn't hurt) but rather the derm and the spa. Spring is the perfect time to prep your skin for all that bikini- and shorts-wearing you'll be doing come summer. "If you wait until June it'll be too late," says London dermatologist Dr. Rebecca Baxt.

To start, take a look in the mirror and if there are any brown spots, spider veins, or other "distractions," then make an appointment to get them zapped. Baxt also suggests microdermabrasion (for your face and body), chemical peels, or intense pulse light treatment to help get rid of dry winter skin and even skin tone.

You can also start laser hair removal now (if you're into that), so you can get through the whole series of treatments before summer, Baxt says.

And even if you can't make it to a dermatologist or esthetician, Birmingham-based esthetician Gina Marí suggests using a body scrub regularly at home for softer skin (she likes Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish, £35.45). Baxt says adding products with vitamin C will help even skin tone.

Budget Friendly Scrub:  Soap and Glory's Sugar Crush Body scrub (100ml), £8.

Re-think your retinol

If you use retinol, whether for anti-aging or acne benefits, Baxt says you can go one of two ways come spring.

If you were using retinol less often (or not at all) in the winter because it dried out your skin, you can start using it again and increase the frequency, says Baxt.

However, she says some of her patients actually use retinol less often in the spring than they do in the winter. The reason? All that lovely sunshine. "The downside of increasing retinol is you become more sun sensitive, so if you know you'll be in the sun more and you know you won't be good with the sunscreen, then you may want to skip retinol in the spring."

Get the SPF out of hibernation

You know you're supposed to wear sunscreen all year long. But let's be real, when you haven't seen more than a sliver of sun in weeks, it's easy to justify skipping the stuff.

But now that it's spring and the sun is going from guest star to main cast member, it's time to reach in the back of your medicine cabinet and grab the SPF. Two important things to remember (aside from simply using it): reapply often and hit up all of your body parts that are going to see the sun.

"Sunscreen only lasts 2 or 3 hours at best, so keep a powder sunblock in your purse or car and swish it on your face," Baxt says. "It'll look like you touched up your makeup, and you've got more sunscreen on." One to try: BareMinerals SPF 30 Natural Sunscreen, £21.25.

And when you're applying, don't forget these spots: your neck, chest, hands, the backs of your ears, and the back of your neck if you have your hair up.

Lighten up

Increased humidity means you can put down the heavy moisturising creams and switch to a lighter lotion, Baxt says. Just look to your complexion as a guide. If your skin still feels tight after putting on your moisturiser, try a slightly richer product; if you've got the afternoon greasies, use a lighter lotion.

Or, if you're really oily or acne prone, Marí says you can skip the moisturiser all together -- if you use a toner. "Toner, not an astringent, helps bring the pH level back to normal after washing your face," she says. "Washing your face strips your skin of it's natural moisture barrier, and it takes your body time to get that back. But toner can help you do this right away." Marí likes Dermatologica Multi-active Toner, £26.40.

Lay off your scalp

Dandruff is typically worse in winter thanks to dry heat indoors and extra-hot showers, but when the humidity starts rising in spring you can usually put down the Head & Shoulders, Baxt says. Obviously if your dandruff is severe there's no reason to stop using a medicated shampoo, but if you're dying to try a different formula Baxt says now is the time to do it.

These tips will be easy peasy and you'll be summer ready in no time!

Have a great weekend!

Stay sweet,

Max Studios

Thursday, 11 April 2013

It is no secret that fashion has always been my passion.  I'd sit for hours looking at various fashion websites, fashion blogs and fashion retailers to educate myself on what's new on the high street and higher end markets.

I was beyond excited when I found a brand (Max Studios) I'd henceforth not heard much of before!  However, this brand has been well established since 1979 in America, with designer Leon Max creating beautiful head-turning shapes and silhouettes with superior fabrics.  These fabrics include leather and yarns to really create a luxurious feminine collection of all occasion garments.

All the biggest celebs are clawing their way to Leon Max's designs and love wearing the chic clothing in his fashion collection.  It is no surprise that that includes Olivia Wilde!  Here she is seen wearing the turtleneck sweater dress from the Leon Collection.

Olivia looks absolutely stunning in this classic and feminine dress.  The dress itself is knitted from rayon and nylon yarns, which clings delicately to the female figure.  The skirt is ultra-flattering with a dropped waist and pleated detailing.

Beautysets - Max Studios

The  turtleneck sweater dress is truly a great investment piece for your wardrobe, especially as the weather is still wintery but due to change to spring.  It is versatile in the way of wearing the dress with a black tights/boots combo during the colder days OR bare legs during warmer spring days.

The Max Studio's dress retails at £175 and can be found on their website.  It is definitely worth having a look at the rest of the amazing collections including Spring/Summer 2013.

I hope you'll enjoy browsing at their website as much as I've done!

Have a fashion packed day!

Recipe of the Day: Lemon and Strawberry Ice Pops

Monday, 3 September 2012

Hi lovelies!

Today is a bit of a blue monday for me, as it feels like summer is ebbing away faster than you can say go!

So really I wanted to cheer myself and everyone that reads my blog up with a healthy, fun way to clutch onto those last dregs of summer.  So thus I've decided to give you a recipe for making your own ice pops.

Makes about 10 lollies

150g/2oz strawberries, hulled
3 egg yolks
75g/4oz caster sugar
a pinch of salt
150ml/5fl oz milk
100ml/31/2fl oz double cream
6 fresh mint leaves
finely grated zest of 1 large unwaxed lemon

Slice half the strawberries very finely and arrange on the sides of 10 x 80ml ice pop moulds. Immediately freeze for 30 minutes. Finely chop the remaining strawberries and set aside.

Using an electric whisk, whisk the egg yolks, sugar and salt together in a bowl until creamy and the sugar has dissolved.

Place the milk, cream and mint leaves in a saucepan and gently heat (do not boil). Remove from the heat and leave to cool slightly, then stir in the egg mixture. Return to a low heat and cook for about 1 minute, stirring all the time, until slightly thickened.

Remove from the heat and stir in the chopped strawberries and lemon zest. Pour into the moulds and freeze for at least 6 hours.
You could even make ice cubes from these delicious little devils.  Add cucumber, lemon, lime and all manner of fruits to your ice cube tray and pour it water for a refreshing take on your water.

Hope you enjoy!

Best Hair Accessories for Summer

Friday, 13 July 2012

When I was just one day old, my mother put a pink Velcro hair bow on my head so everyone would know I was a girl. That was the beginning of my relationship with hair accessories. Hair bows, headbands, clips, and barrettes -- I've tried all forms of "hair flair" throughout the years. And thankfully, hair accessories have never really gone out of style. But lately we've been in a true hair flair era. From Lady Gaga's hair bow to the fictional (but still fashionable) Blair Waldorf and her signature headbands, hair accessories are having a major moment.

As a statement piece, a la Gaga, hair flair packs a lot of punch, but don't discount all the other amazing reasons hair accessories are a must-have in your closet. After all, I've had my fair share of bad hair days, and a pretty hair accessory has always proven to be a quick fix for awkward bedhead. And when my outfit is a bit uninspired (think white T-shirt and jeans), a sparkly barrette dresses up the whole look. Plus, it's a perfect summer trend; during a blazingly hot day, a headband or clip keeps your hair up and away.

But the best reason to love hair flair? It won't break the bank. It's super inexpensive, so you can easily buy a few hair accessories for under 20 pounds. (How's that for a deal?) Then, you have plenty of options when you tire of the one you're currently wearing. That's the beauty of hair flair: it makes switching up your style easy. If you haven't figured it out already, hair accessories have this remarkable way of saving the day.

Polka Dot Bow

Perhaps the most classic form of hair flair, the hair bow adds a bit of girly appeal to any outfit. Plus, it's super easy to create with some fabric or grosgrain ribbon.

Oversized Flower

A pretty faux flower with a sparkly center is a great statement piece, but when it comes to wearing extra large hair accessories, keep the rest of your jewelry to a minimum. A good rule of thumb? Your hair accessory shouldn't be much bigger than the palm of your hand.

Head Scarf

Have a bunch of scarves collecting dust in your closet? Give them a new purpose in life by wrapping one around your head for instant hair flair. For a cute and casual vibe, wear your hair up in a high topknot.

Golden Hair Tie

You'll never want to go back to boring black hair ties after you switch over to gold. Whether in a braid or pony, a sparkly hair tie is a subtle way to amp up your style. Goody makes some metallic options, and you can pick them up at your local drugstore.

Boho Hair Chain

Nicole Richie was one of the first celebs to try boho hair, and now it seems like everyone is jumping on the hippie hair flair bandwagon. Hair jewelry like this mixed metallic chain looks fabulous when worn with long, beachy waves.

Real Flowers

What's even better than a fake flower clip? The real deal. Pick some daises and string them together in a hair garland for a breezy, flower child vibe.

Mini Clip

Bobby pins are oh-so-functional, but sometimes a tad ... boring. Add some bright color and visual interest with a mini hair clip that looks charming, and still gets the job done.

Sparkly Headband

For ultra fancy hair flair, your best bet is to stick with pretty materials like chiffon, lace, or sparkly rhinestones. You won't need much else in the way of jewelry. Simply pair with a flowy dress and heels to complete your look.

Rope and Tassels

Feeling crafty? Braid colored yarn or rope to create a simple headband. Just add some baubles at the end -- charms, beads, tassels -- whatever you have on hand, for a very DIY vibe.

Extra Wide Wrap

An extra wide headband is a cute alternative to a hat and is a super simple way to wear your hair down and flowing, without it hanging in your face .

Red Bandana

Even if you're more of a city girl than a country girl, a blue or red bandana is a perfect makeshift headband and ideal for going on a picnic or just running errands on the weekend.

Want More?

Now that you're all set in the hair accessory department, get summery hair to match.

I'm jumping on this bandwagon :-)

Stay cool in summer: No sticky hot-messes here!

Friday, 6 July 2012

Hi, my name is Angie and I'm completely clueless when it comes to getting ready for an outdoor party or event.

Sure, I love to experiment with makeup trends -- but that doesn't mean that I've never shown up at a June barbecue wearing the exact same look I'd tried out for Valentine's Day. You'd think that the smeared eyeliner, shiny face, and visible sweat-stains at the end of the summertime party would serve as a bitter wakeup call and force my hand into adjusting my routine to accommodate the seasons. But, somehow I never fully get it and repeat the mistake more often than I'd like to admit.

So, how's a girl supposed to get ready, look cute, and have everything stay in place when the weather heats up? I looked to the pros for their best tips for a fresh, seasonal look -- and to help me re-jigger my routine for summer so that I can feel and look cool and collected no matter how hot it gets.

If you're tired of melting into a pool of your own goop, follow my lead and jump into this pool of cool knowledge, and get ready for your most glamorous summer yet.

Lightening up

Your skin changes with the seasons, so your favorite moisturiser might be too heavy once the weather warms up.

Switching your skin care seasonally, and sometimes even daily, is crucial. Hormones, diet, and especially the weather can drastically change the skin's moisture levels from day to day.

In addition to an increased risk of breakouts, I'd like to point out that a moisturiser that's too heavy can cause foundation to slide right off in hotter months, when our skin produces more oil.

The least-complicated way to go is to use a tinted moisturiser with sunscreen that's appropriate for your skin type: It's perfect for that casual summer look. It feels lightweight, looks natural and if needed, you can always apply a spot concealer on any blemishes and under the eyes.

Apply hydrating products within a few minutes after washing and towel drying your skin, as moisturisers trap water, they don't add it.

If you have oily skin, you might be tempted to skip the hydration step, especially in warmer months. Avoid that temptation.

The second that skin senses it's too dry, sebum-producing glands kick into overdrive and produce more oil.

Look for a water-based, oil-free moisturiser. An even better bet is one that's oil-controlling. These products control shine, absorb excess oil, and act as a primer. With oilier skin, less is more, as too many products on the face can feel greasy. Products that do double, even triple duty, can avoid buildup.

(Try Olay Definity Color Recapture, £7.65, or Olay Complete Touch of Sun Daily UV Facial Moisturiser, £12.75.)

The scents of summer

Think of the scents that summer's warmer weather elicits; barbecues, ocean air, blooming flowers, and unfortunately, body odour.

Your skin's glands that are responsible for body odour are called apocrine glands. These glands open into the same pores that your oil glands do, and they're located in the hairy areas of your armpits, groin, and scalp. They secrete a fatty material that gets broken down by skin bacteria that cause odour.

Stress is one of the main triggers that cause these glands to secrete their fatty material and make you stink. And what can cause more stress on a hot day, when you're wearing a flimsy, adorable summer frock? Worrying that you're emitting a foul odour.

Antiperspirants work by blocking both the sweat and apocrine glands so that they can't secrete out of the skin.

If you're hesitant to use aluminum-based antiperspirants, you can try deodorants, which attempt to fight odour but do nothing for wetness.  Or try powdered cornstarch, which might absorb some moisture.

(Try Mitchum Advanced Control Powder Fresh, £3.20)

Your sun-protection factor

Sunscreen formulas have come a long way, but many of us still fear that one with a decent level of protection will feel too heavy and make our faces look and feel greasy. But sun protection is so important for your health and anti-aging efforts that it's worth the time and money to keep looking until you find one you love.

I recommend mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide for the best sun protection. And they should be applied last, after all therapeutic products, such as moisturisers.

You can skip sunscreen as a separate step as long as your moisturiser has an SPF of 30 or higher. It cuts out a part of your possibly already complex routine, and some of the newer products are quite elegant, cosmetically. And they definitely work -- as long as you've put enough on.

Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before sun exposure, and be sure to use 1/4 to 1/3 of a teaspoonful to ensure enough coverage so that you're really getting the protection level that's on the label. (Try Olay Complete Care Multi Radiance Moisturiser, £7.99.)

I use an SPF 35 that provides both UVA and UVB protection. You can find one that's oil-free, which can help keep shine at bay.

You can apply this in lotion form after your moisturiser, and before you apply your foundation and powder. The disadvantage of a lotion sunscreen is the necessary wait for it to absorb before you apply your makeup. If you rush this, you can end up with a streaky, white film that causes your foundation to pile up.

If you're in a hurry and can't wait for sunscreen to absorb, try a spray sunscreen over foundation and even powder.

Hydration to banish shine

No,matter what the time of year, you don't want to look oily. But the experts advise against getting overzealous when it comes to combating shine.

Too frequent touch-ups and heavy powders can emphasize textured skin and fine line. And nothing looks more overdone in warm weather than a woman at the beach, a barbeque, or the pool with a full face of perfectly matte makeup.

You want your skin to glow and look like skin, not makeup: A dewy look is popular this year. It's much more youthful and pretty.

Besides, if you want to cut down on the amount of oil your skin produces, keep it moist.

It might sound counterintuitive to spritz moisture on your face to keep it from getting oily, but adding hydration cuts shine. Skin produces more oil when it's heated, so the cooler you can keep it, the less oil it'll produce.

For drier skin types that get a little shiny by mid-afternoon, an alcohol free toner kept in a spritzing bottle works well for refreshing. You can buy the bottles at any drugstore for around £2. For a bit more money, many lines offer hydrating setting sprays that contain soothing and refreshing ingredients, such as aloe vera and cucumber.

Your (un)beach tote

In addition to a refreshing hydrating or toning spritz, I'd recommend tossing some oil-blotting papers into your summer bag.

I tend to carry standard beach bag items every day in warmer months, and blotting papers are a must.

If you don't feel like blotting papers are strong enough to banish your shine, brush on some translucent or photo-op powder: It'll add just enough pigment for coverage without adding a cakey, thick layer.

Another item in my bag: multitasking color sticks that can add a bright pop to eyelids, lips, or cheeks.

Color wash

It's a guideline to follow all year round, but particularly in summer: If you go bright with one feature, lighten your look on other parts of your face.

Light, bright lips in neons and pastels are hot. It's an easy way to achieve a fresh pop of color. They look modern and fun paired with a nude, natural eye.

Shimmery, sheer bronzes and golds are flattering eyeshadow tones for nearly everyone, and they work well with neon pink, orange, or purple elsewhere on your face.

Another super easy way to wake up your look is tinted moisturising balm.

They're quick and feel amazing on the chapped, sun-scorched lips we seem to all have in summer. Plus, many have juicy, shiny, sheer colors with the added benefit of SPF.

Summer eyes

Here's a tricky one: How to achieve that smudgy look I love for my eyes without it disappearing or looking smeary and insane after a of couple hours.

There are so many new products that offer long-wear and staying power for the eyes. Waterproof eye pencils are easy to work with, and before they set, they're easy to smudge to give a soft look.

Another favorite of mine is gel eyeliner. They are so much easier to apply than liquid and much more resilient. The only downfall to both of these products is that they set in about 30 seconds, so you have to work quickly. Once they're on, they're on!

A less daunting trick for staying power is to use powder eyeshadow over a regular pencil. The powder will seal the liner and keep the waxes in your eyeliner from smudging and melting.

Waterproof or water-resistant mascaras can also help you avoid the "raccoon" look, and many come off easily with just soap and water.

Also especially great for summer: cream shadows. They're extremely easy to apply, long-lasting, and don't crease or smear like the cream eyeshadow formulas of the past. And you can also use them as a base and apply powder eyeshadow on top to help it last.

Although you generally want to use a lighter, softer hand when creating a summer makeup look, there's one step you'd be remiss in skipping. If you're going to forgo anything, don't forgo primer. Applying primer under colors helps them wear a lot longer.

A rule to ignore

How many times have you heard/read that you should never wear a warm, peachy orange on your lips unless you want your teeth to look more yellow? According to those in the know, that old adage is no reason to shun Pantone's color of the season.

Much like there's a perfect red out there for everyone, there's a perfect, flattering coral as well. Coral and tangerine are the most daunting colors to wear right now, but they add warmth to every skin tone.

There are so many variations of red and orange, even ones with bluer, more pink bases, that coral won't necessarily make teeth look more yellow.

I WILL be trying coral this season.  No doubt.

xoxo,
Angelique
