Betty Buff Morning Coffee Sugar Scrub

Thursday, 31 May 2012

‘Morning Coffee’ is the first of Betty Buff’s sugar scrubs that I’ve tried and I wasn’t disappointed!
Nice big 250ml tubs of natural ingredients – perfect for sensitive or allergy-prone skin as Betty Buff products are completely free from colours, fragrance and strange ingredients I can’t spell let alone pronounce! Made in the UK too and with a commitment to buying British and Fairtrade.

Easy to apply – simply scoop out of the jar and rub on to damp skin: the more water you use the smoother the scrub will be, for a really intense scrub use less water. Rinse off when you’re done. No matter how intense you get there’s no redness as you get with some of the grittier scrubs – if there is, go slower and calmer!

Morning Coffee left skin feeling lovely and smooth – it’s perfectly balanced and doesn’t dry skin out like some scrubs and it’s not greasy like others where the goodness swims in so much oil that you have to wash it all off rather than rinse.

This scrub is ideal for preparing your skin for summer and for fake tan.

It was also a success with my male tester – hubby said he liked the coffee edge and was impressed that ‘real beans are in it!’.

Ingredients include:- * Granulated Sugar * Honey * Evening Primrose Oil * Glycerine * Preservative: Potassium Sorbate

£8 for 250ml from http://www.bettybuff.co.uk/

Review: Veet Easy Wax Kit

Wednesday, 30 May 2012

Hello kitties,

I've got a great review for your today!  As previously mentioned, I'm all about getting my summer beauty preparation started (even torrential rain can't dampen my summer spirit) and I recently volunteered myself to road-test this nifty new waxing gadget from Veet. It's a bit like the self-heating wax systems you see in salons, but this kit has a roll-on device so there's minimal mess!

What you get:
- the Veet self heating device with a base and electrical cable
- roll-on wax refill for legs and arms
- 12 removing strips
- 4 post depilatory wipes

How you do it:
Its extremely easy to use and assemble: you just insert the wax cartridge in the device, plug it in and wait for 20 minutes. I’ve left it longer then that, maybe 30-35 minutes as I found the wax takes a bit longer to get to a fluid consistency.
Apply the wax on the leg in light layers and use the strips to pull the hair. I didn’t really believe the reviews that its was going to be painless, but oh my goodness it blew my socks off! No pain, just perhaps a mild discomfort but nothing compared to an epilator for example.

A few observations:
  • Like everybody else reviewing this product, I've got one complaint: the 12 removing strips are not enough for both legs, never mind for further applications. I've got regular-sized pins and still managed to use about 10 on just one leg (waxed only up to the knee).
  • I tried to cut them in half to make them go further but its more hassle as you can't get a long chunk of it.
  • I would advise to reheat the wax for about 10 minutes before you move to the next leg/arm.

Verdict:

I used Veet's new Easy Wax on my legs, which is a nice easy area (I probably wouldn't feel comfortable using it in more tricky places!). It's easy to use, it heats up really quickly and the wax glided on nicely. One quick pull of the wax strips and voila - I was totally hair free! I was also impressed with the amount of wax that came with the product - plenty for both legs.

The Veet Kit can be bought at most supermarkets and drug stores, and retails at £29.99.  Everything that you need is included in the kit.

Well, I'm sold on it! If I can get a salon-perfect waxing result at home, it'll definitely make me that little more organised to get set for summer.

If you've already got your summer routine on the go, let me know!

Pretty Pink Fashion Trends: Barbie's story

Tuesday, 29 May 2012

In middle school I used to wear a mood ring -- remember those? The idea is that depending on your mood, the ring's stone would change colour. Mine was consistently a bright shade of pepto pink ... which was fine by me, because I've always been the cheerful, glass-half-full type. But it's not like I dot my i's with hearts or dress up as Elle Woods for Halloween, I just have a slight girly-girl streak.

And my love of all things pink has lasted -- even after Paris Hilton almost ruined the colour for an entire decade. So when I started seeing my favorite hue on the runways and in magazines recently, I couldn't have been more excited. It should be no surprise that for this colour story I rounded up a massive list of beauty and fashion trends in pepto pink -- the pinkest of pinks.

Now, pink isn't just for Barbie (although I'll take the convertible and dream house any day). There are a ton of ways to work it into your style, whether your mood ring is naturally pepto or a smoky gray. Here are three key tips to get started:

1. Pair pink with hardware like studs or chains to balance things out and avoid that too sugary sweet vibe.
2. Add an unexpected pop of pink to an otherwise neutral outfit. A pink lip or pepto clutch is a great place to start.
3. Mix with other bright colours like tangerine or cobalt. Just make sure to keep a streamlined silhouette to avoid a mess.

Okay, ready for a pink parade? SCROLL for Pink OVERLOAD!

Dye Time: Hair Colour Trends to Try

Monday, 28 May 2012

Hello lovelies,

WHAT an amazing weekend it has been!  The temperatures here in the United Kingdom has soared to around 25 degrees Celcius and it feels amazing to be in the sun again.  I really enjoyed the double BBQ's we had on each day of the weekend - because we don't get to do that too often!

So the weekend really got me into the weekend mood!  I thought about colour and having lovely colours in your hair.  This is fast becoming THE trend of the spring/summer period.

A few years ago: Unusual hair colour like greens, pinks, or blues automatically earned you the label of "freak" or "punk." Manic Panic was the dye of choice, and you could only find it at special stores like.
Now: Pastel pink hair has made its way into the pages of "Vogue," and celebs are wearing turquoise tips on the red carpet. "Unusual" hair color has officially gone mainstream and top salons are jumping on the new dyed hair trends.

While we don't know why people have changed their attitude about coloured hair, it's a change that makes me very happy. Another way to express yourself and get creative with your hair? What's not to love? Plus, there are a variety of techniques and ways to wear this hair colour trend, so it's easy for any girl to try.

Whether you're looking for a bold, long-term commitment like dipped tips, or a quick and non-damaging method like chalking, I got the info. Now all you need to do is to scroll down.

Seeing Colours

Teal green. Deep blue. Pale peach. These are just some of the colours girls are trying right now. But the most popular shade? All the girls want pink -- and there are hundreds of shades of pink. Adding that all kinds of pastel shades are hot right now. It's almost summer so girls are going for lighter colours, plus pastels don't cause as big of a contrast with many natural hair colours. It creates more of a subtle effect.

Darker jewel tones are also very popular. Beet purples and deep blues are finding their way into the mix. Another bonus to choosing a deep jewel tone like blue is the variety of hues that appear when the colour begins to fade. I love blue because it eventually fades to a turquoise green.

As for the colours to avoid, I haven't seen a lot of primary colours, like bright red or yellow, or deep green.

Colour Me

Now that you've decided to experiment with a little colour, what colour should you choose? I'll let you in on what shades work best depending on your hair and/or skin tone.

Pink: This works best on blondes, however a brunette with a warm skin tone could wear a deep rich pink or a pink with a little more red in it. Pinks would also be fun on redheads.
Blue: For girls with dark hair and an olive complexion, I recommends navy, while blondes should try a turquoise or pale blue.
Purple: All skin tones suit purple, but Iespecially love it on a dark brunette.
Green: I only see this working on a blonde, it's a tough shade.

Time for a Dip

Dipped tips are the most popular way to wear this hair colour trend. The process requires a pretty big commitment because the hair must be bleached before any colour is applied -- even if you're already blonde. Because this process is complex, many stylists recommend that you get your tips dipped at the salon. You can also get a wider variety of hues since the colour is mixed to your preference.

This is how the process works: First, the stylist applies the bleach to the ends of the hair. After the hair has turned a light yellow colour, the stylist blots the hair. Then, she applies the colour pigment to the bleached areas. Once the colour has set, the stylist rinses the hair, revealing the final colour. If you've already experimented with the ombre look, you have a leg up. This is great for girls who had the ombre look. They already have the bleached tips, so they just need to add colour.

Keep in mind, bleaching your hair will damage it, so it's usually easier to trim the coloured ends off rather than try to re-dye them.

Stay Colorful

How long will your colour last? Depends on how much you wash your hair and whether the dye is permanent, semi-permanent, or temporary. According to my stylist, if you use semi-permanent colour and you wash your hair every other day, you can expect the colour to last four to five weeks. But if you wash your hair every day, you're looking at two weeks.

In the meantime, my stylist recommends using a colour safe shampoo and a leave-in conditioner with UV protection. (Tip: Stay away from clarifying shampoos. They'll rinse out your colour immediately.)

Refreshment Please

If your dipped tip colour is fading or completely washed out, there is a way to refresh your colour at home. To keep your ends vibrant, I offer up this trick: Add a few drops of store bought concentrated colour, like Manic Panic, to your conditioner. Once you have the desired density of colour, apply to your tips, pushing the formula up the hair shaft. Then, leave it on while you shower, rinsing it out at the end.

Block that Colour

Dipped tips not your thing? Looking for more impact? Try colourblocking. Much like colourblocking your clothes, colourblocking your hair is a "dye technique that creates a defined geometric accent of colour". One way to do this is to dye your hair at the crown one colour and use another colour from the nape down.

Since it's such a precise method, it is recommended that you get your hair colourblocked at a salon. You really need to know your head shape and how the hair falls to get a good colourblocked look.

Tie-Dye Your Hair

If colourblocking is too dramatic, try the tie-dye method. It's when two to three colours are applied to the hair so that the colour fades from dark or light (or vice versa). I think of this as a fun version of ombre for longer hair.

To get the look, start by pulling the hair into a ponytail at the nape of the neck. Next, section the hair into multiple parts and secure each section with another elastic. (Tip: It's important that the rubber bands are tight.) Finally, apply the various colours to each section in the order you would like them to fade. Once the hair has been processed, remove the elastics and "squish all the colours through the ends."

Clip It In

Want something less damaging than dye? Coloured hair extensions are a great compromise. Many stores sell clip-in coloured hair extensions, like Buy Hair (try Remy Clip-in Streak, £3.95). They're easy to place in your hair (simply clip them on), but you can run the risk of looking like a little girl depending on how many you use and where you place them.

Less is more. You don't want a whole head of clip-ins. Instead, aim for a few strands, but put them in a peekaboo area. This means placing the extensions underneath several layers of hair and not directly on top. It should be hidden enough to make people wonder if they saw something or not when they catch a glimpse.

Besides buying a pre-dyed hair extension at a store, you can also have them custom dyed at a salon. Not only can you pick the exact colour you want, but you can also decide if you want to mix colours on the same strand. Plus, your colour will last a lot longer. Store bought extensions use fabric dye to get their colour, which loses its colour faster than a salon extension. At the salon, they pre-bleach the piece and use real hair dye.

Chalk It Up

Not ready to dye your hair at all? No worries. You can still get in on the dye trend in a less permanent way. The solution: chalking, which has been spotted on celebs like Lauren Conrad and Kate Bosworth.

Chalking involves colouring your hair with soft pastels or sidewalk chalk. Since it only lasts until your next shampoo, this look is super non-committal. And unlike other dye jobs that require you to bleach your hair before colouring, this doesn't, which means less damage to your hair. No surprise that it's a favorite with many hairstylists. Chalking is something every girl can do.

And if you're worried that chalking won't show up on darker hair colours, don't. You can get it to show up very well on brunettes. It's just about heavily applying the colour.

Chalking 101

Ready to chalk? Swing by your local craft store and pick up some sidewalk chalk or soft/dry pastels. Just make sure you don't buy oil pastels. Oil pastels won't work, and they'll leave your hair a greasy mess.

Before chalking, I suggest applying a good pomade, like Sebastian Matte Putty, £12.75, to the hair. This creates a gritty surface for the chalk to stick to. Chalking doesn't work nearly as well if the hair is dry. You can also just wet the hair for a similar effect.

Once you've applied the pomade and selected a piece of hair to chalk, I recommend twisting the strands before chalking. This is so the colour doesn't look so deliberately placed. Colour the twisted strand heavily, then let it go. Finally, mist your hair with hairspray to lock in the chalk.

I hope you've enjoyed this summery special.  Let me know how your weekend went!  I'd love to know.

Celebrity Prom Pictures

Friday, 25 May 2012

Because it's Friday, I thought I'd end our prom-week in a light-hearted fashion!  Let's have a look at all those crazy-cool celebrities and what they wore for the prom....

Celebrities really are just like us -- they go to prom wearing goofy dresses and take photos with that sunset backdrop too. Don't believe me? Then check out these 25 celebrity prom photos.

I've got everyone from Jennifer Aniston, to Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Natalie Portman, Dakota Fanning, Fergie, Demi Lovato, Christina Aguilera, Brad Pitt, Halle Berry, Sandra Bullock, Michelle Obama, Sarah Palin and tons more. All of these celebrities have fun prom dresses and (in my opinion) kind of wacky prom hairstyles. I guess that's what happens when you don't have a professional put together your prom styles, huh?

It's so much fun looking at celebrity prom pictures from before they were famous, but I love looking at their prom dates even more. Do you think the girl standing next to Brad Pitt had any idea he'd be the mega-star that he is? Or Lady Gaga's prom date -- think he knew she'd take the world by storm with "Poker Face"? Or Michelle Obama's date -- think he knew he was with the future First Lady? Makes you wonder about your prom date -- maybe he'll be a celebrity some day? Better not lose those prom pictures just in case.

So if you're looking from some prom dress or hair inspiration, or you just want to laugh at how celebrities looked before they were famous, check out these celebrity prom pictures -- and get ready to laugh.

Taylor Swift's Prom Photo

OK, so this wasn't that long ago, but doesn't Taylor Swift look adorable with her prom date?

Lady Gaga's Prom Photo

I can't see much of Lady Gaga's prom dress unfortunately but I love the sunglasses, so cool.

Miley Cyrus' Prom Photo

Not sure why this photo looks so old but I love the bold color choice for Miley Cyrus' prom dress.

Britney Spears' Prom Photo

Awww, this prom photos is a nice reminder of when Britney Spears was all sweet and innocent.

Natalie Portman's Prom Photo

Before she was a gorgeous Oscar nominee, Natalie Portman was just a normal girl heading to prom with her friends (and a giant corsage, but that's OK).

Jennifer Aniston's Prom Photo

Jennifer Aniston got to re-live her prom days in a couple "Friends" episodes, but I think she was cuter in real life.

Dakota Fanning's Prom Photo

Dakota Fanning opted for a short prom dress, she's probably over all the long dresses she already wears on the red carpet.

Fergie's Prom Photo

Love the gloves Fergie is rocking with her prom style. The blonde hair is pretty sweet too.

Demi Lovato's Prom Photo

Demi Lovato has a very impressive limo for prom (that would be a Rolls Royce for you non-car aficionados), her prom dress is pretty too.

Christina Aguilera's Prom Photo

So apparently before Christina Aguilera was famous, she wasn't even cool enough to have her own prom date, she had to share? Surprising. Her dramatic prom dress and makeup -- not as surprising.

Brad Pitt's Prom Photo

Behold, the luckiest high schooler ever -- Brad Pitt's prom date. And her very bridal-looking prom dress.

Kristin Cavallari's Prom Photo

Kristin Cavallari's prom hairstyle is pretty casual, I'm sure it matched her SoCal prom style.

Halle Berry's Prom Photo

The flowers, the crown, looks like Halle Berry was prom queen. Shocking (er, not so much).

Sandra Bullock's Prom Photo

How cute was Sandra Bullock and the baby's breath in her prom hairstyle? Adorable.

Michelle Obama's Prom Photo

Michelle Obama is rocking a pretty racy prom dress -- do you see the leg slit? Side note: her date looks old enough to be her dad, but that might just be the mustache.

Claire Danes' Prom Photo

Another casual bob for a prom hairstyle, but Claire Danes is totally cute enough to pull it off.

Sarah Palin's Prom Photo

Former governor Sarah Palin is sporting a pretty sexy red prom dress, was she vying for a spot on "Dancing with the Stars" all the way back then?

Will Ferrell's Prom Photo

In case you were wondering if Will Ferrell was funny in high school, the crown on his head in this prom photo seems like a clear "yes, he was." Anyone else thing he was also kind of cute back in the day?

Courteney Cox's Prom Photo

This seems like an ultra-conservative prom dress for Courteney Cox, but we love the belt action and her cute smile.

Kellie Pickler's Prom Photo

Remember belly-baring prom dresses? Kellie Pickler sure was trendy with her prom style.

Heather Locklear's Prom Photo

It's really not fair that a high schooler can look as sexy as Heather Locklear does in her prom photo. Are we at all surprised she's got the prom queen tiara on? Nope.

Meg Ryan's Prom Photo

Meg Ryan seems a little more interested in her prom date (crooked bow tie and all) than he seems in her. Wonder if he's regretting that now?

Ashley Judd's Prom Photo

Ashley Judd's prom dress looks a little "Golden Girls" with all the beading, but she can pull it off.

Robin Wright's Prom Photo

Robin Wright's prom dress is pretty classic, she could probably still wear it today if she was going to prom.

Verne Troyer's Prom Photo

Verne Troyer (you probably know his as Mini-Me from "Austin Powers") was prom king in high school, pretty cool.

Hope you've enjoyed this little treat of looking at 'old' prom pictures.

Have a wonderful weekend filled with lots of fun!
