The BIG 30

Monday, 31 August 2015

Hello loves,

Today is my birthday, and a big one at that. I'm turning thirty today. In some ways I wanted to keep it to myself and pretend to still be in my twenties, but then I thought - NO! I need to be honest and declare to myself and the world that I'm moving into a new age bracket and there is nothing wrong with that.

In some ways I feel like at this age I should have had some deep and profound revelations, however that hasn't been the case for me. I haven't changed much, however organically my mindset has shifted over the past few years and there are parts of me that no longer become worried about certain things.

You're probably wondering what I'm rattling on about. Well, I feel like at thirty you should understand yourself, your life, your goals and your adventures. And even though I'm not completely out of whack with these concepts, there are certain aspects of my life that I don't feel is 'figured' out. For the first time in a long time, I do not care.

That is where the real shift occurred. I recently made a big move and changed where I live, work and how I operate my day-to-day life. It wasn't super easy and I dissapointed a lot of people. I just knew that I had to stop worrying about what every other person felt was right or wrong for me to do, and to just focus on myself. I had some exploration of self to do. I needed to 'get to know myself again.

My biggest problem over the years is the fact that I did not have a selfish bone in my body. I was thoughtful, caring and always worried about what people thought of me. There is nothing wrong with being like this, however it becomes all-consuming in a way. I never focused on caring for myself or sorting my own needs out. I had to learn about balancing both parts equally and knowing when not to worry about what people thought or about their opinions.

Additionally, I've always had a knife-edged view of my body. It has always been mostly negative, with heavy emphasis being placed on parts that I don't like. My knees, my thighs, my arms etc. etc. Every woman has her own insecurities, and it is not always as easily said as done to accept your own "flaws".  According to your perception these are flaws, however other woman might think those are some of your best assets. I struggle with this still, however have come to accept that I need to put far more emphasis on the parts of my body that I like and try and draw attention to those areas. I love my overall shape, because I have curves. I could (and probably should) loose a good few pounds, but until I do, I'm gonna love myself. Because I was fearfully and wonderfully made by God. I'm unique and one-of-a-kind. It is such a profound thought when you realise that you ARE special and you are loved.

Overall, I'm excited beyond belief to step into my new adventure which is thirty. I'd love to work on my business ideas, spend loads of time with my family and friends, travel, be more healthy, possibly stepping into motherhood at some point and live life to the fullest.

If I could give anyone in their twenties some good advice, it would be to just go for it without fear of what everyone else thinks. Screw it. This is your time. Go to uni if that is what you want to do. Start that business. Push yourself to get your dream job. Travel. Explore. Do what feels right. Love. Smile. Live in the moment.

My thirties is going to be filled with 'living in the moment'. That will be my slogan to live by. I haven't got space in my mind for all the silly little problems and obstacles that I create for myself. I've decided to free myself of expectation and just 'go for it'.

So here is to thirty. Chin chin.

My Little Box: Road Trip Box

Saturday, 29 August 2015

Hello loves,

My little present arrived again and I thought I'd share it with you again. Some people don't have the money to subscribe to a beauty box every month, but it is still nice to see what is inside. I haven't been too keen on the amount of time this box has taken to deliver, so I may be cancelling it. It seems a shame to cancel it, however I may have to start saving my money for a bigger project that may involve travelling...

This month the theme of My Little Box was based on Road Trips that you take and I really liked the majority of items in this box. Obviously some items will be saved until I next travel, but it is so nice to have these little items in case!

Each month you get a sweet little postcard-style print with a unique picture to sum up the box. This is drawn by Kanako. I am in love with these prints and I've started using them in a picture frame that I keep next to my bed. It looks super cute, inspires me and keeps me positive. There is also a small magazine with lots of beauty inspired chat, Parisienne quips and new bloggers to keep your beady little eye on.

The first official item that formed part of the box was this sweet little travel organiser. It is made from plastic, but doesn't feel flimsy. There are seperate compartments for travel tickets, passport, credit/debit card and pen - however there is also a nifty compartment across the entire travel wallet where it can multi-task as a waterproof storage wallet for tech products or documents. It has a sliding opener (<-- super technical term there!), also known as a zip lock. Haha, got there in the end.

Digging a bit deeper into the box, I found the cutest little notebook. It is a two-in-one stationary item, where you can use it as a little notebook to write to someone about your travels and then send it to them. It folds into an envelope. My Little Box has also thoughtfully included a very nice pen. When I travel it is so nice to take time to do as little as possible, this action would be what Italians call 'Il bel far niente (dolce far niente)' meaning 'the sweetness of doing nothing'. Writing feels like that for me.

The box also includes a travel-sized bottle of Garnier Micellar Water, which is an awesome way to clean any make-up and pollutants off your skin at the end of the day. I've got my larger bottle at home, and will definitely take this smaller size on holiday. There is also a My Little Beauty aftersun body gelee. Again it is a convenient size, and smells so nice - a bit sweet but not sickly. Great for applying after a bit too much sun.

There is an Essie nail polish called 'Haute in the heat', which is the prettiest red/pink I have ever clapped my eyes on. I painted my toes with this nail polish the day I got it. It is a real cosmopolitan-looking colour that will make a holiday in the city, on the beach or anywhere really oh-so-sensational! And the final item that seals the box-deal (literally) is the gold temporary body tattoos that you can apply for that extra touch of glamour.

Overall, I couldn't fault this box. It is ridiculously practical for any type of holiday, and as I mentioned previously, I'm saving mine for the right moment to use all the lovely gifts.

September is the time that I'll be heading off on a roadtrip to France, so that will ofcourse be the perfect time for using these cute items.

Where would you use these items?

Three Words I Learned From Eat, Pray, Love

When I first read Eat, Pray, Love last year I admit I had very little sympathy for Elizabeth Gilbert. I couldn’t relate to her journey – at least not all of it. I was painfully familiar with her story of depression, emotional eating and spiritual quest, but I didn’t have all the relationship baggage she was carrying. So, my first reaction to her decision to travel the world in search of herself was judgmental – she was running away! Perhaps there was a bit of envy as well. I couldn’t imagine having the luxury of leaving my friends, family and responsibilities behind to find happiness in a strange land.
I had my own troubles at the time I read the book. I would have liked to flee from my life for a while. But if I were to find happiness, I’d have to do it somewhere between the football field and dance class. I’d have to conquer my own demons eating Teddy Grahams straight from the box, not pizza from Naples. And I’d have to find the God that dwells within me as I meditated over my laundry basket. Finally, in a house of five people and no medicine man, I would have to learn to love myself without losing myself. And, I didn’t have a book advance to make it all a bit easier. Bitter? Yes, a bit.
But as I traveled with Liz to Italy, India and Indonesia, I began to appreciate her courage. She devoted an awareness to her happiness that many of us never allow ourselves to explore. Through her journey, I learned many lessons that I am grateful she shared with the world.
My Three Favorite Words:
Liz learned many new words on her odyssey – and her appreciation for language and meaning was inspirational. Here are my new favorite words (and the remarkable concepts they convey), thanks to the extraordinary family Elizabeth Gilbert discovered in Italy, India and Indonesia:

What's in my handbag?

Wednesday, 26 August 2015

Hello loves,

I thought it may be fun to write a post about 'What is in my handbag?'.  I really enjoy being nosey and finding out what other ladies may be hiding in their bags.

Often girls can be so resourceful on what they manage to fit into their bags, but my resourcefulness may not reach these levels. I'll leave it for you to judge.

So without further ado....

My handbag is just a small black faux-suede mini satchel bag from River Island. If you wanted to get your mitts on this little bag, just click here. These are also available in other colours, but I'm particularly liking the oxblood one and the leopard print hybrid. There is plenty of room for everything you need to carry, and the magnetic latches are very sturdy. The price is also not too bad!

And this is literally all the goodies that I tend to carry in my little bag. I've really been into carrying smaller bags, compared to my usual larger totes. I just think that my poor shoulders needed a good break! The time to downsize had come along and now I'm just embracing it.

I have my wallet in my bag from River Island also. I know that there is a bit of a trend here for River Island, however I just found it a really convenient size. It has a white flap and gold/grey clasp with the main body being a lime green. It is a really nice colour combination and was perfect to celebrate the start of summer. I've always used the River Island large purses, and they have enough space for cash, cards and coins. They are literally all I have been using. However, please watch this space on the blog for some 'lust-have' accessories, which should be coming up soon!

Another essential is my gold iPhone (not pictured here) and my iPhone headphones. The headphones aren't very comfortable but I just suck it up as they fit so nicely in the little case. I also carry a small diary and a pen to keep up-to-date with appointments. I know I could use my phone in this wonderful digital age, but I'm a bit old school and still like to keep a diary on hand.

My sister-in-law also kindly bought me a Gucci hand-mirror which is beautiful. It is quite heavy but such a nice piece to carry with you and whip out to fix make-up. I also keep Kleenex blotting sheets with me, in case my T-zone gets oily. Previously I've also used the DHC ones (which I really like).

I keep minimal make-up on me during the day, however lippy is a MUST. My latest lip muse is MAC's Snob, which is just the prettiest pink that is a hint off your own lip colour. It is not too garish or too bold and hits the right notes for a pretty look.

The other pieces that I have to carry with me is without a doubt my Soap and Glory Hand Maid anti-bacterial gel. This is scented quite heavily so if that is not your thing, steer clear! The scent is definitely not unpleasant and it really keeps those nasties at bay. I also carry Soap and Glory's Endless Glove hand cream, which is super nourishing on my mitts. I've had dry hands on quite a few occassions lately, and this whips my skin back into shape.

I have to always have a lipbalm on hand and my current favourite is the Burt's Bees Mango lipbalm. The butters in this baby is awesome and keeps my lips amazingly soft and kissable. I also keep a lipgloss on hand just in case I need some sheen on my lips and at the moment that is in the form of Urban Decay's Naked gloss in Sesso. This is a rose colour with pink shimmer in. It looks great if you want to give your look a boost or polish. And the final items I always keep on hand is the Yes to... cucumber wipes in travel size and some polo mints. They are fairly self explanatory. Wipes if something spills or my face needs a wipe and polo mints for minty fresh breathe. Not the biggest fan of gum anymore, so mints are great.

What do you keep in your bag?

Week in Pictures

Saturday, 22 August 2015

Hello beauties,

I have had some amazing weekends over the past few months. I've been quiet on the blogging front and for that I'm sorry, but I'm also at the tail end of writing a thesis for my Masters Degree and had loads of people over for visits. So time was fairly precious.

However, I missed you all and felt like sharing a few snaps from my recent adventures.

My darling husband's niece came and visited us for the week. We had so much fun shopping at Lakeside and then on one day decided to visit the zoo. These are just a few pictures that I took on the day of the awesome animals.

The easiest way to make me super happy is the opportunity to hang out with the animals. They rock!

One of the highlights of the day was the petting zoo. The goats were so silly because they are used to people feeding them. It just made me laugh so much when the silly billies came up to you expecting food and a fuss.

I did end up taking a selfie with the penguins, which made so many people laugh. But sometimes you've just got to do these crazy things. They were willing to pose with me, which was pretty awesome.

This was my nod to fashion on the day. Jeans, my black crop top and my black box handbag. Not exactly the most fashion forward ensemble, however it was comfortable for the long day of walking everywhere. I love my T-bar sandals that have beads sewn onto the T-bar. They are super comfy.

On the way out of the zoo it was a fundamental part of the visit to grab a souvenir...and it consisted of this little cube that contained flamingoes. I'm absolutely fascinated by these wonderful birds and think they are so cool! This was the cutest nod to them and contained a shock of pink.

Finally towards the tail end of the weekend, we went to a parade and town festival. There were the obligatory drinks, barbeques and outdoor activities on offer. It was so much fun, but some of the parade characters were funny (and a few were a bit lame).  They were meant to resemble super heroes - however some were just normally dressed and so on.  Haha, however it was an experience.

We had to fit a selfie in just before the parade started of mister, me and his niece, and ended the day off on a real high. We had a drink so the girls had a Kopparberg and the mister had a San Miguel beer. We went home and played Lego Jurassic Park on X-box, before turning in for the evening.

I hope you enjoyed a look at my weekend activities, and I'd love to see what you've been up to.
